Understanding the ecological role of wetlands in a changing river: Protecting and monitoring wetland fish habitat in the Thousand Islands.

Thornton Ritz, PhD Student – SUNY ESF

October 28 | 5:30pm

Youtube Live Stream link: https://youtu.be/YBBoO3cPHt0

Wetlands connected to the St. Lawrence River are critical nursery habitat for young of year fish as they provide an optimal growing environment with abundant prey and low predation risk. Newly hatched fish are exposed to fluctuating water temperature, oxygen levels, and water level; all of which play a significant role in their growth and survival. Currently, these habitats are experiencing increases in water temperature, decreases in oxygen, and low water levels. Through long term monitoring projects as well as newly expanded efforts, the Thousand Islands Biological Station (TIBS) continues to understand the ecological effects of these changes. Come learn about how evidence based research and restoration projects at TIBS are used to protect this important fish habitat, and what these changes could mean for the future of the St. Lawrence River fish community.

Note: Our off-season lectures will be held in a hybrid in-person/virtual format.  If you are unable to join us in-person, we invite you to join us via Youtube live stream.  The live stream link for each lecture can be found above.
