Yet as an Early Lake Ontario and St. Lawrence River emerged out of the Ice Age\, the first peoples were living here\, and are considered ancestral to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) people. They witnessed this Region’s environment undergo radical changes in the first 7000 years after melting glaciers left a massive draining Glacial Lake and the River was born. SUMMARY:Bronze Casting
DESCRIPTION:Michael Saari will be returning to Clayton in 2023 to teach Bronze Casting for Marine Hardware at the Antique Boat Museum.  Basic patternmaking\, sand molding\, and bronze casting will be covered\, as well as information on how to build an inexpensive furnace and necessary tools for sand-casting molten bronze.  Making of cores (for casting hollow forms) will be addressed\, as well as important safety practices and resources.  In this hands-on class\, each student will make a wooden pattern\, learn to use a sand mold\, pour bronze\, and finish castings.  Possible projects include cleats\, row locks\, hooks\, chocks\, small hand tools\, fair leads\, and more.  Students are encouraged to bring item(s) to reproduce\, favorite hand tools\, and suitable work wear; expect to take home 3-4 completed pieces. \nSeptember 25-29\, 2023 | 9-4pm \nClass Size: 8 \nCost: $400 includes tuition and materials \nRegister now by clicking here!\nMichael Saari is a master metalsmith with 40 years of experience in forging\, fabricating\, and casting metals for hardware and sculpture. He was the lead shipsmith in the restoration of Mystic Seaport’s whaleship CHARLES W. MORGAN and was selected to crew on the Morgan’s 38th voyage along the New England coast in 2014. Michael was part of the winter crew on the USCG Barque Eagle\, travelling from New London\, CT to Jacksonville\, FL. He has studied abroad and in the U.S.\, completing a master’s degree in Fine Art. \nCommissions have included a 20′ eyeglass sculpture commemorating American Optical\, restoration of historic hardware at major museums\, and demonstrations for educational purposes at numerous conferences. Having taught workshops in schools of handcraft in Scandinavia and the U.S.\, Michael most recently left a position with the City of New York as Parks Department Blacksmith\, to resume private commissions and take a position as adjunct professor of art at Nichols College in Dudley\, MA. A lifelong sailor\, he has competed in the Star Class\, restored a wooden Firefly\, and has enjoyed teaching bronze casting at Wooden Boat School in Brooklin\, ME.

DESCRIPTION:Ways of Learning: An Apprentice Boatbuilder in Japan\n \nDennis Brooks\n \n\nAugust 4 | 5:30pm\n\n \n\nYoutube Live Stream: https://www.youtube.com/live/5Ttco0ZjHow?feature=share\n\n \n\n \n\nWhen people think about Japan\, they usually have in their minds images of manga and anime\, busy urban centers\, and an economy based on innovations in electronics.  Most people do not know that there is also a second Japan\, wherein lies a rich history of traditional arts and crafts\, many of which are fast disappearing.  Douglas Brooks has apprenticed with boatbuilders from throughout Japan since 1996\, building over a dozen types of traditional wooden boats. Brooks’ teachers were all in their seventies and eighties when he worked with them\, and he is the sole apprentice for seven of his nine teachers. In this slide talk he will share his experiences with traditional crafts drawn from twenty-six trips to Japan since 1990\, visiting all forty-seven prefectures. Brooks’ research in Japan focuses on the techniques and design secrets of the craft.  These techniques have been passed from master to apprentice with almost no written record.  His book\, Japanese Wooden Boatbuilding is the first comprehensive survey of the craft\, spanning his first five apprenticeships and including a chapter on Japan’s last traditional shipwright.\n\n \n\n \n\nBrooks will also talk about the nature of craft education in Japan; an ethic that is largely at odds with our notions of teaching in the West.  The apprentice system produced craftspeople with incomparable skills\, yet it required an intense devotion and seriousness from participants.  Brooks has experienced first-hand what it is like to learn when the apprentice is forbidden from speaking.  At the core of this process is the belief that one learns by observation and perseverance.
