SAILING

This evening sailing program allows adults 18+ to come sail after work. The course is designed to provide an opportunity for individuals with different experience levels to learn more about sailing a variety of boats. Students will be encouraged by the instructors to choose what they want to accomplish by taking the course. It can serve as a way to get out on the water, to fine-tune skills, or using the U.S. Sailing Small Boat Sailor “Red Book” as a guide new sailors can work on mastering the skills of sailing. The Museum’s small sailboat fleet of a Shellback Dinghy, Sunfish, and the gaff-rigged boats Rebecca, Roseblossom, & Margaret G will be used by the class. Space is limited to 4 people and class may be divided according to the skill level of students.

Boating and Seamanship

OUPV/6-Pack  Captain’s Licencing

Get your Captain’s License at the Antique Boat Museum. The Captain School will host the course and give the exam right here at the Museum in Clayton. Taught by expert instructors from The Captain School, this course prepares you for the US Coast Guard captain’s licensing exam for an un-inspected passenger vessel license (a.k.a. the OUPV or 6-PACK license) and offers the final exam on site at the Museum. Course study areas include: general seamanship, rules of the road, chart navigation, code of federal regulations, and weather.

Winter Course: February 20-28, Noon-8pm
Spring Course: June 4-14, Noon-8pm

Master Licensing

Upgrade your OUPV license to a Master license with this course. This license allows you to operate in bays, rivers, and inland lakes and is issued in 25, 50, and 100 gross ton increments. The course will be taught by The Captain School and the exam will be given on the last day and is included in the tuition price.

Please Note: There is a minimum of 12 students and a maximum of 24 students for all captain’s licensing and endorsement courses.

Boater Safety

This course teaches the particulars of handling a motorboat or personal watercraft (PWC). Taught by a member of the local United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, the course covers the rules of the road, reading buoys, boat handling, and other boating safety related topics. The certification test will be given during the final class. Both adults and children (age 10+) are encouraged to attend. The course meets New York State safe boating requirements.
