Course Overview

Whether you're six or sixty, new to the River or have spent every summer here since you were born, we've got something for you and your kids to learn. What can you do with us? Learn to sail, get your captain's license, build a boat with your family and get your NY State Boater Safety Certificate, to name just a few of our fascinating opportunities. All courses have a low instructor-student ratio, and are taught on and around our beautiful waterfront campus. OUR EXPERT INSTRUCTORS
Boater Safety courses are taught by Gary Kocher and other members of the local US Coast Guard Auxillary, Flotilla 06, Division 01.

Captain's License, Master's License, Towing Endorsement and GPS courses are taught by Joe Calzone under the auspices of The Captain's School, based in Cape Coral, Florida. Joe is a retired electrial engineer and has been teaching seamanship and navigation courses in Florida and New York for more than 12 years. Joe and his wife Audrey are both members of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary. When her schedule permits, many of the licensing classes also enjoy Audrey's wonderful baking during their coffee breaks.

Traditional Canoe Paddle-Making Class is taught by Caleb Davis. Caleb was brought up in and around Montreal, Canada. He participated for many years as a camper and staff at a well known camp several hours north of Montreal. Canoeing and camping were major features. Caleb started his business, Tremolo, in the early 1990’s. Tremolo is his outlet for making strip canoes and teaching traditional flatwater canoeing and paddle making. Caleb also has worked as an Athletic Director, teacher, tutor and coach in several high schools over the past twenty years.

The ABM Sailing School programs are taught by Anna Larson and Jordan Jones, both are American Red Cross-Certified Sailing Instructors. Anna has taught a wide variety of summer programs for both children and adults at the Museum in recent years. She is a certified teacher and has spent the last two school years teaching through AmeriCorps. Jordan has been working with the ABM Sailing School for the past 3 years. He is currently attending Clarkson University, majoring in business.

Wednesday Night Sailing is supervised by Andy Anderson, ably assisted by Richard Fuhrman. Andy is retired from IBM and has spent many years on the water moving by the wind. Andy and his wife have made the Thousand Islands their summer residence, while spending the winters in North Carolina. Andy is a US Sailing-Certified Level 1 Instructor. Richard is a dedicated boatshop volunteer, who, together with Andy, spent many hours during the summer of 2006 giving the Museum's Bluenose-class sloop "Rudolph" a complete makeover. This handsome sloop is just one of the boats that will be available for use on Wednesday evenings during the summer of 2008.
